French Citizen # 22 (illustrated by Hayden Sengua)

After Maxmilien Robespierre and Louis-Antoine St. Just heard the song of Orpheus, both were faced with events that caused their status within the French Government to be compromised and ultimately lead to their death.

This French citizen was one of the men who was present when St. Just, typically a great orator, stuttered and fell silent during a speech before the national convention.

He appears in Sandman # 29, on page 23, in panel 1.

London Citizen # 10 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

John Constantine woke with an uncomfortable feeling that someone was trying to tell him something. He went about his day as he always would. He brushed his teeth, got dressed, putting on his favorite overcoat and left the house to go to the Easy Diner to get some breakfast.

While at the diner, Leigh points outside and tell him that his “girlfriend” is outside. Constantine turns and sees Mad Hettie pounding on the window of the diner trying to get his attention. He steps outside to speak to her.

There are several men on the streets outside the diner and this man is one of them.

He appears in Sandman # 3, on page 5 in panel 1.

Sailor On The Sea Witch # 9 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In Worlds’ End, Jim recounts his meeting a gentleman named Robert Gadling who was a passenger on the Sea Witch and was going back to England.

On their journey they faced a fierce storm and the following day the sea was calm with no wind to propel them. The crew spent the down time repairing things that the wind had damaged the previous day.

One of the sailors noticed a large school of fish racing toward them on the horizon. The men cast their nets and caught hundreds of fish as they passed the Sea Witch.

Suddenly the ship lurched as someone called out for land. A large sea serpent rose from the water briefly before vanishing before their eyes.

This man is one of the many sailors who caught fish as they leapt out of the ocean and saw the sea serpent. He appears in Sandman # 53, page 17, panel 4.

Eve’s Raven (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Dream returns to his realm after being held in captivity by Roderick, and later Alex Burgess, to find his kingdom in disrepair.

Lucien gives Morpheus an update on the residents of The Dreaming.

He tells him that the Raven Woman has decayed badly and lives in nightmares. I believe that the Raven Woman Lucien is referring to is Eve, who lives in a cave within The Dreaming.

This Raven is Eve’s raven.

It is worth mentioning that this is not Matthew The Raven. This unnamed raven would be Matthews predecessor, since Matthew Cable was killed and granted the possibility of rebirth in Swamp Thing # 84, which was published in March 1989 and this raven appears in Sandman # 2, which was published in February 1989. However, according to the Sandman Audible Drama, this raven is Matthew, as Eve calls out to her raven saying "Here, Matthew, Hush." This line was not in the published comic.

The final fate of this raven is not known.

Eve’s Raven appears in Sandman # 2, on page 14, in panel 2.

I love this portrait from Max. I really like how he can accurately draw this raven and give it so much energy and emotions with the use of his colors and positioning of the character. I love the texture for this portrait and the dark branches in the background. This is an absolutely lovely raven.

Candy Man (illustrated by Xaveria)

In Sandman # 14, a host of serial killers descend upon a quiet hotel for a convention for people who take pleasure in killing others.

This convention is eerily similar to other conventions, both professional and fan conventions in the sense that they have panels and discussions regarding a variety of topics relating to death and killing.

El Dorado is one of the serial speaking at one of the panels. He is part of the 3:30pm panel discussing sanity and mental abnormalities in a panel called “There Is No Sanity Clause.” Candy Man is on the panel with El Dorado and Psycho-Killer.

He appears in Sandman # 14 on page 26, in panel 3.

Ezra Paulsen (illustrated by Anna Hybsier)

In The Doll’s House, Rose Walker is trying to locate her missing brother Jed.

Jed has lived with their father, but after their dad died in a car accident, Jed went to live with their paternal Grandfather, Ezra Paulsen, who was a lighthouse keeper on an island.

Ezra Paulsen was 82 when he died, from drowning. At this point, Jed went missing.

Rose reflects that their Grandfather sounded like a “nice old guy” and looked a lot like Santa Claus in the only photo she has of him.

Ezra Paulsen appears in a photograph in Sandman # 11 on page 8 in panel 4.

Serial Killer # 89 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In Sandman # 14, a host of serial killers descend upon a quiet hotel for a convention for people who take pleasure in killing others.

This convention is eerily similar to other conventions, both professional and fan conventions in the sense that they have panels and discussions regarding a variety of topics relating to death and killing.

This particular serial killer attended the panel where The Corinthian was giving his guest of honor speech.

Morpheus confronted The Corinthian and ultimately uncreated him. Afterwards Dream spoke to the crowd and said that they all had sustained fantasies in which they are the heroes, but from that day forward their dreams are over and they will now know, at all times, exactly what they are and how little that means.

This man was standing in the background as The King Of Dreams put forth his judgement on the group of serial killers. He appears in Sandman # 14, on page 36 panel 1.

This is another great portrait from Max. I really like how he interpreted this character. I thought, in the published comic, that he looked a bit like J. Jonah Jameson from Spiderman comics, but ultimately Max created a character much more frightening. I love the cold expression on his face and his eyes seem lifeless and dead, which is incredibly creepy.

In the time of Haroun al Raschid, Baghdad was a place of wonders.

Worlds’ End Patron # 90 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

As Petrefax seeks approval to tell his tale, this strange character is sitting at a table directly behind Brant, Charlene and the other patrons of Worlds’ End.

We know absolutely nothing about this character, and as I’ve said many times, I wish that we could get insight into a lot of these charaters.

She appears in Sandman # 55, page 2, panel 6.

Man From The Ancient Necropolis # 12 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In Worlds’ End, Petrefax tells a tale about is experience attending an air burial at Mount Calamon by request of his master, Klaproth.

At the air burial, each person attending must tell a story. Scroyle tells the others gathered about his conversation with a traveler regarding the origins of the Necropolis Litharge.

Scroyle told a story which had been told to him by a stranger, who we recognize as Destruction, about a Necropolis, which is no longer named, who had lost site of the care and respect for the dead. He told Scroyle that a group of strangers entered the Necropolis and asked for the cerements and for the book of rituals used for their funeral rites, the Necropolitans laughed and called them mad. As a result of their disrespect for the funeral rites the ancient Necropolis was destroyed and Litharge became the new Necropolis.

This man from the ancient Necropolis appears in Sandman # 55, on page 15, in panel 4.

In the Destruction story from Endless Nights, Rachel has dreams of the world ending. Sometimes it’s by fire, sometimes by ice and sometimes the deaths are caused by disease. In Rachel’s dream, she sees this corpse while walking through a mall.

This man died while sitting on a bench inside the mall.

This citizen is spending the afternoon in the Roman market near the steps where Caesar and Lycius are sitting.

This panel is in Sandman # 30, page 13, and is panel 4.

Assassin (illustrated by Lars Brown)

While at Worlds’ End, Brant Tucker listens to the Seeker tell a tale about an alternate Earth where Prez Rickard was the President Of The United States.

After the death of Kathy and he retired from his life in politics, he disappeared from public life and eventually disappeared from Steadfast.

There were rumors about his disappearance. Some claimed that he was hitch-hiking across America or that he was kidnapped by aliens until the day that Prez died. Nobody knew how he died and there was, of course, just as many stories and conspiracy theories. One of the theories was that his assassination was ordered by the current President.

This man is the alleged assassin in that conspiracy theory.

He appears in Sandman # 54, on page 18, in panel 4.
