Creature In The Woods (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In A Game Of You, Barbie, Luz, Prinado and Wilkinson are traveling to the Brightly Shining Sea.

They travel through the snowy mountains, narrowly avoiding the Black Guard. When they reach the forest, they eat some fruit and then enter the forest as it begins to get dark.

This creature is one of the residents of the forest. It was watching them as they passed.

The creature appears in Sandman # 35, on page 13, in panel 2.

Dead Raven (illustrated by Max Rugers)

After the death of her kittens, the storyteller cat felt betrayed by her humans and that she was subordinate to her humans.

She prayed to the darkness and to the king of cats and she dreamed.

She journeyed into The Dreaming and encountered a Dead Raven who asked her why she came to the Heart Of The Dreaming. She explained that she came for justice, revelation and wisdom.

The Raven explained that she would not find justice or wisdom in dreams, but she might find revelation, but it would take a strong heart to find it. He told her to go to the mountain. In the mountain lived the Cat of Dreams.

The Dead Raven appears in Sandman # 18, on page 10 and 11.

Corpse # 6 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In The Kindly Ones, Thessaly found Lyta Hall as she wandered the streets aimlessly after the supposed death of her son. She took her back to her apartment and placed her in a protection circle because she knew, with the events that had been put into motion, Morpheus would be searching for Lyta, possibly to kill her.

Thessaly fell asleep and dreams of people hanging from silver chains, hooks puncturing their skin and she feels a flicker of sadness and regret.

When she awakes she sees Dream standing before her.

The dream is something very reminiscent of the Hellraiser films, but I suspect that Thessaly has never seen those movies. Perhaps this is a nightmare of remembrance of things past…or perhaps it is simply a nightmare.

This character is one of the corpses hanging in Thessaly’s nightmare.

He appears in Sandman # 65, on page 18, in panel 3.

Demon # 333 (illustrated by Xaveria)

In the fourth chapter of Preludes And Nocturnes, Dream visits Hell to retrieve his stolen helmet.

After reclaiming his helm, as he readies himself to leave, Lucifer challenges Morpheus, telling him that there are millions of demons surrounding him and that he has no power in Hell.

Dream counters and says “What power would Hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of Heaven.”

The crowds of demons part and let him pass, contemplating his words.

This demon is one of the residents of Hell who listened to Morpheus’ speech. He appears in Sandman # 4, on page 23, in panel 2.

Demon # 362 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In P. Craig Russell’s adaptation of Dream Hunters, a Fox and a Badger make a wager to see who can make the Monk leave his small temple.

They each try a variety of methods to convince the Monk to leave and nothing seems to sway him.

One evening the Badger created an illusion in which an army of demons surround the temple and shout that if the Monk doesn’t flee they will eat his flesh.

The Monk exits the temple and expresses his unhappiness with these tricks and chases the “demons” away with a torch. Where the demons once stood a badger remained. The Monk threw the torch and singed the tail of the Badger.

This was the last time the Badger attempted to trick the Monk into leaving his temple.

This Demon is one of the Demons that the Badger created in order to scare away the Monk.

He appears in Sandman: Dream Hunters # 1, on page 15, in panel 1.

Born Again Christian Serial Killer (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In The Dolls House, Rose Walker and Gilbert find themselves in a hotel on their search for her missing brother.

On this particular night, the hotel is filled with people attending a Cereal Convention, which turns out to be a serial killer convention.

Like any convention, there are special guests and panels. This man is part of a panel regarding religion and killing. One panelist believes that he is god and that he kills people to end their suffering and to give them a new life in Heaven. Another believes that God is telling him to kill people. This man, a born-again Christian, kills because he is doing the “bidding of the lord.” He kills people with his “hammer,” which I suspect is not really a hammer, but maybe it is.

He appears in Sandman # 14, on page 18, in panel 1.

This is a nice portrait from Kai. I really like the resemblance to a certain so called “Politian.”

Dead Woman # 27 (illustrated by Anna Hybsier)

Orpheus went into the depths of the Underworld to rescue Eurydice. As he approached the throne room of Hades and Persephone he encountered a large gathering of the dead.

To implore the rulers of the Underworld to release his deceased wife, Orpheus sang a song about love and loss. This song caused the dead to weep and some even rose into the air.

Worlds’ End Patron # 38 (illustrated by Cat Farris)

Brant Tucker wanders throughout Worlds’ End, in between listening to tales told by the patrons of the inn.

This small creature is huddled amongst several others of his kind and are startled by the thunder and lightning.

I would love to know what these characters are and why they are trapped in the inn. Why are they so frightened by the lightning? Is it a natural fear of thunder and lightning or is there a history between lightning and these characers.

This little creature appears in Sandman # 55, on page 1 in panel 7.

Demon # 175 (illustrated by Lars Brown)
