Badger (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In Dream Hunters, there was a monk who lived in solitude next to a temple in the mountains.

One day a fox and a badger passed by the temple and saw the monk working in his garden.

The Badger challenged the Fox to a wager that whoever could force the monk to flee from the mountain would be able to live in the temple. Living in a temple was far more comfortable than living in a badger’s set or a fox’s den. The fox agreed to the wager.

The badger attempted to run off the Monk first, by pretending to be a group of men sent by the Emperor to bring the Monk back to the imperial palace and become the the minister to the imperial court. The monk proclaimed he would leave immediately after the leader of the men answered one question, why the emperor would send a badger to tell him to go to the imperial court. The badger slunk away defeated.

The fox, then, tried to lure the monk away from the temple disguised as a beautiful woman, who was the daughter of a governor. The monk, in his surprise, asked how the daughter of the governor happened to be a fox.

The Monk was not surprised when, a few nights later, a group of demons appeared outside the temple demanding that he run. Of course, the monk did not run, but instead confronted the demons with a flaming torch and threw it at one of the demons, who happened to be the Badger. The badger’s butt was burned and he howled in pain and disappeared into the night.

This badger appears in Dream Hunters on pages 2-13 and in the P. Craig Russell version of Dream Hunters in issue # 1, on pages 4-9 and 14-19.

In the “Death In Venice” story from Endless Nights, Sergei traveled to a small island near Venice, after being haunted by a memory of encountering Death on the island when he was a small boy.

When he returned to the island he once again met Death and she asked him to help her try to open a gate that prevented her from entering the court of Alain, who had been able to cheat death by reliving a single day repeatedly for several centuries.

Sergei was able to kick down the gate and he and Death were able to enter the court in 1751.

Together they walked through the small kingdom and encountered several people as they passed through the court.

Once Death confronts Alain, the citizens of his court begin to fade away. This woman is one of the citizens of Alain’s court.

When the Monk finally stood before Dream he implored him to save the life of the fox. The Monk noticed, within the robes of the Dream King, faces of the sleepers and dreamers flitted through the fabric.

This Dreamer is one of the faces that the Monk saw within the folds of the cloth.

Wolf (illustrated by Te’Shawn Dywer)

In The Kindly Ones, The Corinthian and Matthew are sent, by Dream, to locate the missing Daniel.

As they draw nearer to the location of the child, The Corinthian is attacked by a large wolf.

I have been unable to determine if this is a common wolf or if it is somehow affiliated with Loki. It seems a bit big to be a common wolf. It’s possible that this wolf is Fenrir (or Fenris).

This wolf appears in Sandman # 64, on page 21.

Italian Man # 28 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In Endless Nights, Sergei visits Venice, Italy and returns to one of the islands in the Venice lagoon.

As a child he had visited one of the islands and had a brief encounter with Death, who asked him to try to open a rusted gate, which he was unable to do. As an adult, he returned to the island and once again met Death. This time he was able to open the gates and let Death into Alain’s court.

His entire encounter with Death felt like a dream and when he awoke and arrived back into the city all of the people seemed paper thin and unreal. He wondered what happened behind their eyes and in their heads.

This man is walking through the courtyard early in the morning, after Sergei returns to the city from his visit with Death.

Shakespeare asks him why he is writing this play for him:

Shakespeare: Why do you want the play? Why do you need me to write it? Why am I doing this?
Morpheus: Why? Because we made a bargain, Will Shakespeare. Two Plays.
Shakespeare: Yes. The first play I wrote as a gift for….your friends…but this is…your play. For you.
Morpheus: Yes.
Shakespeare: Why THIS play?

Before Morpheus can respond, Shakespeare is woken by his wife.

This is one of the Island Spirits that appear on the beach as Morpheus and Shakespeare talk.

The Fox asked Dream what were the creatures she noticed in the distance. Dream told her that they were Baku, the dream eaters.

The Fox had heard of the Baku. If a Dreamer wakes of a nightmare or a dream of ill-omen, the Dreamer may call upon the Baku to eat the dream and all that it foretells away.

She asks what would happen if she caught one of the Backu after it had consumed a dream.

The King Of Dreams responded with silence.

This is a fantastic portrait from Kai. The details are exceptional. I love the shading of the muscles and the line work around his back crest. I really like how Kai drew this creature’s face. The shape of his face is perfect. I like the contrast between his tiny nose and the large teeth and mouth. This is a perfect portrait from Kai.

Tiffany is a dancer at Suffragette City.

One afternoon before work Ishtar came to Tiffany’s apartment (at the Town House Hotel). Ishtar told Tiffany that she was worried about her and brought her some food and made her breakfast.

Tiffany gets cleaned up and dressed. Tiffany, unaware that Ishtar is a goddess, asks how she picked her name. Ishtar explains that it’s an old name and asks how Tiffany chose her name. She explained that she got the name from a Tiffany Watch that he mom used to own. She also revealed to Ishtar that her real name was Alva Ellen Rasmussen.

Tiffany left home when she was 15 and immediately became a stripper. She reveals that all the men she’s had in her life haven’t been very good to her. When they arrive at work they go to the dressing room to change and begin their evening.

Later that night three visitors come to the club to speak to Ishtar. Afterwards Ishtar comes out on stage and dances like she’s never danced before. It frightens Tiffany and she runs, leaving the club. The club implodes and only Tiffany managed to escape.

Tiffany finds herself sitting out near the fence, completely naked and a stranger approaches her. The stranger, who Tiffany sees as a man, speaks to her briefly and them gives her his jacket before disappearing.

After the traumatic experience at Suffregette City Tiffany decides to change her life.
