Homeless Man # 2 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

Thessaly takes a cab to a desolate part of the city looking for Lyta Hall.

She finds her, sleeping, near a group of homeless people.

When she find the homeless people she asks about Lyta and this man answers her, telling her that she is sleeping against the wall.

As Thessaly leaves with Lyta one of the homeless men asks another what that was about and this man tells him that he believes Lyta is a robot space alien and that Thessaly is with the FBI and that the taxi was a camouflaged government space ship.

This man appears in Sandman # 63 on pages 2-4.

Dead Man # 147 (illustrated by Mateus Compart)

After the death of his beloved wife, Orpheus travels to the Underworld, hoping to reclaim his lost love.

As he moves further through the Underworld he begins to encounter the dead.

This Dead Man is one of the many that resides in the Underworld and encounters Orpheus when he stands before Lord Hades and Queen Persephone and implores them to return Eurydice to him.

He appears in The Sandman Special # 1, on page 31, in panel 4.

Citizen Of Baghdad # 157 (illustrated by Anna Hybsier)

Haroun al Raschid, attempting to strike a bargain to preserve the wonders of Baghdad for all eternity, shows Dream the splendors of the city.

As they stand atop a magnificent building he explains to the King Of Dreams that he is the ruler of the city and it is his dream for the city to last forever. Dream agrees, but says that Haroun al Raschid must tell his people in order to make this happen.

This man is one of the citizens of Baghdad walking throughout the streets on the fateful day that Haroun al Raschid agrees to preserve his city for all time in the dreams of humanity.

He appears in Sandman # 50, on page 28, in panel 1.

Andrew Dane Wilson’s Dream Women # 1 and 2 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In 1939, Andrew Dane Wilson, a critic of influence, received an invitation to a party at Fawney Rig, which is the home of Roderick Burgess.

He arrives at the party and mingles with the group of people gathered and after the festivities, retired to his bedroom.

That night, as he sleeps, Andrew Dane Wilson dreams of two women who punish him and force him to apologize for every bad review he’s ever given.

These women appear in Sandman Midnight Theatre on page 44 in panel 5.

Joshua Norton’s Dream Bird # 1 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In “Three Septembers And A January” Despair challenges Dream in an attempt to humble the Dream King. Despair’s claim is that life has hurt Joshua Norton to the point of despair and Despair wants to see if Morpheus’ little dreams can redeem him.

Morpheus enters the dreams of Norton and asks what he dreams. He explains that he has been dealt a hardship, which has wiped him out financially. He dreams of being respected again.

As Despair taunts Dream, he tells Norton that he will give him a dream, and accepts Despair’s challenge.

While Dream is walking with Joshua Norton within dreams, there are two birds sitting on his hat and shoulder.

This is one of Joshua Norton’s Dream Birds.

The bird appears in Sandman # 31 on page 4, in panel 2.

The Phoenix (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Haroun al Raschid was troubled in his soul. He saw the many splendors of Baghdad and wanted them to last forever.

One night he decided it was time to preserve his kingdom and make a bargain with the King Of Dreams.

He used the golden key he wore around his neck and went into the depths of his palace. He passed through his harem and through his prisons. He passed through the room filled with voices and through the labyrinth and through the rooms of fire and jewels. He passed through the room of enchanted swords and the room of lamps, rings and goblets of power. He passed through the room that contained nothing but eggs.

In the room of eggs there were two eggs, a black egg and a white egg. The white egg was the phoenix-bird’s egg and when the time comes, the phoenix will emerge from this egg.

It is not known what will hatch from the black egg.

This is the phoenix that will one day hatch from the white egg.

The phoenix appears in Sandman # 50, on page 14, in panel 4.

Citizen Of Alain’s Court # 9 (illustrated by Hayden Sengua)

On the night of Alain’s masked ball, a flotilla of boats arrived in the bay and dispatched several masquerading women.

Some of the citizens of Alain’s court suspected the mysterioius women might be noblewomen, while others whispered that they were courtesans. A third speculation is that they were nuns from the convent of San Michele Di Murano who arrived in defiance of their vows.

This man is the citizen who believes that these women are nuns who visit the party against their vows.

He appears in Endless Nights, in “Death In Venice” on page 12, in panel 8.

Man From The Tale On The Painted Screen # 9 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

When the Monk arrives in The Dreaming he passes through many rooms on his way to the throne room of the Dream King.

He passes a series of painted screens. When he looked at the screens they were “frozen and still” but if he looked away and then glanced at it again the scenes would change and a new tale would begin.

This man is one of the characters on the painted screen in The Dreaming.

He appears in P. Craig Russell’s adaptation of The Dream Hunters, in issue # 3, on page 16 in panel 4.

Kubilai Khan’s Priest # 6 (illustrated by Lukas Ketner)

Marco Polo accompanied his father Nicolo Polo and uncle to China and they were given audience before Kubilai Khan.

They planned on converting Kubilai Khan to Christianity, but The Khhan refused saying that his Priests have power to perform miracles for him. They can “ensure that it is always summer above his palace, through it rains and storms nearby. They cause his food and wine to fly into his hand, so never a drop is spilled, and never a man touches them.”

This man is one of Kubilai Khan’s Priests.

He appears in Sandman # 39, on page 12, in panel 4.

Newspaper Editor (illustrated by Lars Brown)

Joshua Norton wrote a procolmation declaring himself The Emperor Of The United States.

He gave the declaration to a reporter from The Evening Bulletin named Fitch, who took it to his editor.

His editor read the letter.

The newspaper editor called the letter drivel and asked Fitch what he was going to do with it. Fitch replied that he was going to print it.

The Newspaper Editor appears in Sandman # 31 on page 7.

Dreamer # 67 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In Season Of Mists, Dream decides to go to Hell to rescue Nada, which he reflects may not deserve the eternal punishment she was given for rejecting this love.

Before going to Hell, Dream feels obligated to visit Hob, in the event that he does not return.

He travels through the dreams of people in order to find a perfect bottle of wine to take to his friend for their meeting.

This man is one of the dreamers who Morpheus passed through on his search for the wine.

He appears in Sandman # 22, on page 15, in panel 2.

Japanese Man # 6 (illustrated by Carl Sciacchitano)

The Onmyoji wandered the streets, homeless and crazy after the Fox took her revenge on the murder of her lover, the Monk.

Some people thought that the Onmyoji became crazy as a result of his wife and house being burned down. Others believed that it was the loss of his eye that caused his insanity. Still others believed that it was fox magic that led to his condition.

This man is one of the many people who speculated on the Onmyoji’s insanity.

He appears in the P. Craig Russell adaptation of The Dream Hunters in issue # 4, on page 25 in panel 5.

Folk From Across The River # 4 (illustrated by Te’Shawn Dwyer)

In the Desire story in Endless Nights, Kara was in love with the son of the chief of the village.

The Chief and a group of village elders tried to negotiate grazing rights, for amber and for the ransom of prisoners between their tribe and the folk from across the river, but negotiations went badly and ended with the death of the village chief.

This man is one of the folk from across the river.

This man appeared in The Desire story from Endless Nights on page 6 in panel 2.

White Grub Thing # 2 (illustrated by Hayden Sengua)

While trying to avoid The Black Guard and the Cuckoo’s minions, Barbie and her friends discover the body of Tantoblin.

She recalls when she first met the Tantoblin.

Barbie and Martin Tenbones were on their way to the Arch Of The Porpentine when they were attacked by these White Grub Things. Barbie described them as Fat Children.

These White Grub Things appear in Sandman # 35, on page 5, in panel 1.

Raven # 18 (illustrated by Mateus Compart)

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to Mateus Compart!!!

Mateus is an artist from Brazil, who is currently attending University. So far he has contributed several characters to the Sandman Portraits project, each in a different and unique style. I am excited that he is part of this massive project and I cannot wait to see what he does and how he approaches the characters!

In The Kindly Ones storyline, Ravens gather in The Dreaming prior to the Kindly Ones entering the realm.

It is not known where they came from or how they were called to The Dreaming, but they came.

They are described as larger than eagles and older than Gods. They waited in the shadows for the dead to start filling the fields.

This Raven appears in Sandman # 66 on page 14, panel 1.

Winged Horse Made Of Glass (illustrated by Anna Hybsier)

In Baghdad, in the time of Haroun al Raschid, there were many wonders and splendors. There were enchanters and scholars and musicians. There were mechanical wonders that imitated life and there were men with the heads of animals and animals that could speak like men.

There was also the only flight of a winged horse made all of glass, except for it’s eyes, which were made of bone.

This winged horse appears in Sandman # 50, on page 7, in panel 4.

Onmyoji’s Servant # 6 (illustrated by Nicole Ingram)

When the Monk was a young boy, living with his family, he found a monkey in the market place that was believed to be dead, but The Monk saw he was still alive and brought the animal home. He nursed the monkey back to good health and he became the family pet.

One day, a noble man, The Onmyoji, came to visit The Monk’s father. This day ended in death and tragedy as the monkey was killed and the Monk’s father was disgraced.

This is one of the Onmyoji’s servants.

This servant appears in the P. Craig Russell version of The Dream Hunters in issue # 2, on page 22, in panel 2. He is standing behind The Onmyoji, holding a banner.

Magician # 6 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In 1939, Wesley Dodds visits England while investigating the suicide of his friend Linus Benchley.

His investigation leads him to Fawney Rig, the home of Roderick Burgess.

Dodds, attends a party thrown by Burgess and for the evening’s entertainment several magicians performed, filling the night with illusions and miracles.

This man is one of the magicians that performed at the Burgess party.

He appears in Sandman Midnight Theatre on page 43.

Dignitary # 181 (illustrated by Anna Hybsier)

In Endless Nights, Dream and his lover, Killalla Of The Glow, travel to a palace amongst the stars to attend the parliament concerning zones of responsibility and the merits of obligation for creation.

During the parliament, Kilalla wanders through the gardens. She was picking purple flowers when a group of dignitaries entered the plaza. She is greeted by Mizar, who explained that the meeting was suspended on a point of order.

This Dignitary is one of many who gathered in the plaza during the break from the meeting.

He appears in the background in Endless Nights, in the story, The Heart Of The Star, on page 11 in panel 2.

This woman is one of the dreamers within his cloak.

This dreamer appears in Dream Hunters # 2, on page 17 in panel 1.

After escaping The Eremite, Didi and Sexton have breakfast in a bagel restaurant and then go to a street market where Didi looks for a new ankh. She finds one at the table of a man selling jewelry. Next to this man is a woman selling hand-made dolls.

This Doll Sales Woman appears in Death: The High Cost Of Living # 3, on page 13, in panel 1.

In Dream Country, a group of cats meet in a cemetery, one evening, to listen to the tale of a wise storyteller cat who recounts her visit with the King Of Dreams and how dreams have the ability to change reality.

This is one of the cats that listened to the storyteller cat’s tale.

He appears in Sandman # 18, on page 4.

Customer At Lux # 11 and 12 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In The Kindly Ones, Lyta Hall goes out to dinner with Eric Needham at an upscale restaurant called Lux, which is owned by Lucifer.

As they are eating dinner Lyta has a sudden urge to leave. She is concerned about her son, Daniel, and suspects that something bad is happening. She tries to convince Eric to let her leave but he suggests that Lyta call home as reassurance that everything is fine. Nobody answers the phone.

This man and woman are two of the customers of Lux. They are standing in the lobby as Lyta attemps to call home.

They appears in Sandman # 57, on page 24, in panel 1.
