Serial Killer # 86 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Rose and Gilbert find themselves staying in a hotel where a Cereal Convention is being held. Rose assumes that this convention is for breakfast cereal enthusiasts or companies that make cereal, but she is wrong. This convention is host to the worst serial killers in the country.

This convention is eerily similar to other conventions, particularly comic book conventions. The Cereal convention has panels and discussions regarding a variety of topics relating to death and killing.

This particular serial killer attended The Corinthian’s was giving guest of honor speech.

This man was sitting in the audience with other serial killers listening to the speech. Dream appears to be sitting a few rows behind him.

This serial killer appears in Sandman # 14, on page 32 panel 5.

Man # 50 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

After performing Whole Wide World on David Letterman, she leaves the studio to head to the premier of Day In The Park, which features one of her songs on the soundtrack.

Outside Letterman’s studio a group of Foxglove’s fans wait for her.

This man appears in Death: The Time Of Your Life # 1, on page 24, panel 6.

He is standing near the doorway to the studio. I am unsure exactly what his role is. He is not the chauffeur, since we see him in panel 11 and he’s obviously a different person. He could be a bodyguard for Foxglove, but it doesn’t seem likely since he is standing so far away from her. It’s possible that he is some sort of employee of the David Letterman studios.

Little Girl With Wings # 3 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In The Kindly Ones, Rose travels to England in hopes of discovering the answer to the cryptic message given to her from Zelda, from Rose’s Grandmother, Unity Kincaid, who is dead.

Rose arrives in England and goes to Fawney Rig, where Unity spend a majority of her life asleep. Fawney Rig was originally the home of Roderick Burgess and later became a nursing home run by Paul MaGuire, the lover of Alex Burgess, who has been asleep since Dream’s escape in 1988.

While wandering around the house Rose encounters three women who are residents of Fawney Rig. One of the women, Magda Treadgold, tells Rose a story of a Man “Who Loved The Ladies.”

This man would try to romance any woman with a pretty face and once they outlived his desire he would move on to another town and another woman.

One day he saw a beautiful woman bathing in a river and he promised her that if she was his “lady-love” he would give back the clothes he had hidden. She agreed but only under the condition that she would be his wife and would be married at the next church they passed. He agreed and promised saying things like “If I don’t marry you, may that the worms shall eat me” and “if I don’t marry you, I wish that our children might grow wings and fly away.”

She became his “lady-love” which is really just a polite way of saying that they had sex.

On their travels they passed a church, but the man made an excuse as to why they could not be married in there. Eventually she became pregnant and needs a house to live in.

The Man finds a cottage inhabited by an Old Woman. The man went into the house and found the Old Woman was asleep in the bed. She was old and weak and the man smothered her and buried her in the midden heap, which is a dump for domestic waste. According to Magda, it is unclear if the woman was a witch or simply an old woman. That aspect changes depending on who is telling the story.

The man told the woman that his old aunt had died and she left him this cottage.

For the next several years, the woman had three children, all beautiful girls and the man would visit a few days at a time and then leave to go seduce other women. Sometimes he would bring back a hen or a pig for the mother and his children to eat.

One day when he returned home his children were not at the cottage.

When he asked the woman where his girls were she replied “gathering berries” or “off fishing”. Eventually he becomes persistant and asks where they are and she tells him that “they’ve flown away.” The man does not believe the woman and when she will not tell him where his daughters are he goes outside and gets an axe and kills the woman.

He then hears a noise outside and goes to see what it is.

His three daughters, who now have wings, fly down from the sky to their father. When they ask where their mother is he replies that she is “gathering berries” and when they ask about the blood on his hands and on the floor he tells them he was “killing a pig.”

The youngest of the three girls looks under the bed and finds the body of their mother.

They let out a long sad wail and jumped on him, scratching and tearing at his flesh, until he was dead.

They flew off into the sky and were never seen again.

The Little Girls with Wings appear in Sandman # 62 on pages 13-15.

Corpse # 7 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In The Kindly Ones, Thessaly found Lyta Hall as she wandered the streets aimlessly after the supposed death of her son.

She took her back to her apartment and placed her in a protection circle because she knew, with the events that had been put into motion, Morpheus would be searching for Lyta, possibly to kill her.

Thessaly fell asleep and dreams of people hanging from silver chains, hooks puncturing their skin and she feels a flicker of sadness and regret.

When she awakes she sees Dream standing before her.

The dream is something very reminiscent of the Hellraiser films, but I suspect that Thessaly has never seen those movies. Perhaps this is a nightmare of remembrance of things past…or perhaps it is simply a nightmare.

This character is one of the corpses hanging in Thessaly’s nightmare.

He appears in Sandman # 65, on page 18, in panel 3.

Onmyoji’s Demon Servant # 13 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

The Onmyoji was afraid, and the fear drove him to seek forbidden knowledge in hopes of driving out that fear. It did not work, and potentially caused even more fear.

In the outskirts of his city there were three women who loved in an old run-down house. The one of the women was young, one was old and the third was neither young nor old. He visited these three women to seek advice on finding peace and a release from the fear. They provided him with a way to gain the strength of a monk in the mountain who feared and desired nothing.

The Onmyoji had to perform a ritual in order to kill the Monk, but needed some personal objects of the monk in order to complete the rite.

The Onmyoji sent his demon servants into the mountains in order to steal a few items that the Monk had touched. This is one of the demons who was sent to gather the belongings of the Monk.

He appears in P. Craig Russell’s Dream Hunters # 2, on page 12, in panel 6.
