Village Soldier # 5 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

This Village Soldier appears in “What I’ve Tasted Of Desire” from Endless Nights.

As Kara reflects on her life she recounts her life in the village and her love for the son of the village chief.

Before they were married, the son of the village chief spent his time with a lot of women. Kara’s sister spied on him and one of the women from the village as they made love beneath a tree. Kara’s sister ran back to the village to tell her sister, who did not admit, at the time, that she loved the son of the village chief.

This village soldier appears in Endless Nights, in the Desire story on page 1, in panel 4.

Thing That Walked The Earth # 5 (illustrated by Nicole Ingram)

In the time of the Monk and the Fox, there were many Things That Walked The Earth that “we rarely see today. There were all manner of entities, beings, wraiths, and creatures, both kind and malevolent.”

This is one of the Things That Walked The Earth.

What is this creature? Is he some sort of demon or a creature from Japanese mythology? I don’t know, but he certainly looks cool.

It appears in the P. Craig Russell adaptation of The Dream Hunters, in issue # 1 on page 22, in panel 1.

Man # 27 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Destiny is the focus of one of the stories in Endless Nights and we get a short glimpse of the mysterious character.

Destiny’s book contains all of the history that has ever happened, that is happening and that will happen, for every person and creature with the entire universe.

This man is one of the many people that appear on the 5th page of this story. He is not necessarily a character, but more of a representation of everyone who appears within the pages of Destiny’s book.

Worlds’ End Waitress # 2 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In Worlds’ End, Brant Tucker confronts the Innkeeper, Rajoguna, about how they are trapped in the inn.

She tells Brant, Charlene and the other guests at the inn that they were caught in a reality storm, which is sort of an echo of a fragile rip in reality.

She asks the guests to look around and see the people at the inn. She tells them that they are not part of the realm of dreams or of death, but in a Free House, which is a refuge, while reality corrects the hiccup it experiences.

As Rajoguna is speaking to the guests, this waitress is in the background serving drinks and food to some of the guests.

She appears in Sandman # 56, on page 3 in panel 1. She is in the far background.

Woman # 13 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

After the car accident, Brant Tucker carries Charlene through a snow storm to a quaint inn, where they are helped with their injuries. Brant is given something to drink and passes out.

When he wakes up he finds Charlene in the inn, at a table, listening to stories.

Mister Gaheris tells the story of a man named Robert who, loves his city and, while wandering through his city on his lunch break, find a silver road. He walks upon the road and finds only an alley.

That evening he missed his regular train and so he takes takes a later train home. He finds himself alone on the train with a tall, thin, pale man with wild hair dressed all in black. His eyes are like pools of night.

Robert realizes that the train is not stopping at any of the regular stations and so once the train finally stops he quickly exits and he finds himself on an unfamiliar street, in a city he doesn’t recognize. He wanders throughout this new city hoping to find a shimmering archway, door or street that will return him to the city he knows and loves.

While wandering through the city he meets woman and while talking to her he notices a doorway that he didn’t recognize. He rushed through the door before it could disappear and found himself in the city he was familiar with.

This woman was one of the first two people he encountered when came back to the city.

Taxi Driver (illustrated by Lars Brown)

In 1939 Wesley Dodds travels to England in hopes of unraveling the mystery surrounding the death of his friend Linus Benchley.

He travels by ship and after disembarking the ship he gets in a taxi to the train station.

The Taxi driver tells him that England is waiting, holding their breath, knowing that they will soon be going to war with Germany.

He appears in Sandman Midnight Theatre on page 12, in panel 4.

This is a great portrait from Lars. I suspect, based on the portrait, that he had read NOS4A2 by Joe Hill since this character seems a lot like Charlie Manx, who drove car that looks similar to the one driven by this taxi driver….or perhaps this is one of the Residents Of The Dreaming who left the Dreaming during Morpheus’ imprisonment and decided to try his hand at being a taxi driver.
