Man # 41 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

Unity Kincaid, suffering from the sleeping sickness, was sent to a nursing home when she was about 45 ,after her parents died. She would sometimes sit in the sun with elderly men and women.

This man is one of the old men who liked to sit outside playing checkers with friends.

He appears in Sandman # 1, on page 21 in panel 6.

This is another wonderful portrait from Lars. I like that he is holding a checker, a specific reference to this character and what he’s doing in the published comic. I really like this portrait.
