After Rose and Jed's father died, Jed went to live with his Grandfather, Ezra Paulsen. When his Grandfather died, Jed went to live with his Uncle Barnaby and Aunt Clarice.
Barnaby and Clarice kept Jed locked in the basement of their home and often beat him. It was due to the emotional trauma that gave Brute and Glob the opportunity to infiltrate his mind and set up their own "Dreaming" during Morpheus' imprisonment.
When Morpheus eventually confronted Brute and Glob, Barnaby and Clarice were killed. Their death was seemingly quick and painless, which is, perhaps, better than they deserved.
