The Phoenix (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Haroun al Raschid was troubled in his soul. He saw the many splendors of Baghdad and wanted them to last forever.

One night he decided it was time to preserve his kingdom and make a bargain with the King Of Dreams.

He used the golden key he wore around his neck and went into the depths of his palace. He passed through his harem and through his prisons. He passed through the room filled with voices and through the labyrinth and through the rooms of fire and jewels. He passed through the room of enchanted swords and the room of lamps, rings and goblets of power. He passed through the room that contained nothing but eggs.

In the room of eggs there were two eggs, a black egg and a white egg. The white egg was the phoenix-bird’s egg and when the time comes, the phoenix will emerge from this egg.

It is not known what will hatch from the black egg.

This is the phoenix that will one day hatch from the white egg.

The phoenix appears in Sandman # 50, on page 14, in panel 4.
