Jonathan Crane

Jonathan Crane is known as The Scarecrow from the Batman mythology. He is one of Batman's most notable villains. Crane, was a professor of psychology and expert in the psychology of fear. He adopted the Scarecrow persona and became a criminal mastermind after being fired due to testing his fear gas on patients.

In Sandman, Jonathan Crane makes two brief appearances in the Preludes And Nocturnes storyline.

His first Sandman appearance is part of John Dee's escape from Arkham Asylum. Dee stumbles upon Jonathan Crane hanging around in a hallway. Crane is attempting to frighten someone who happens upon him and had killed one of the security guards and left him hanging, dead, from the rafters with a "Kick Me" sign taped to his back.

Crane's second appearance in Sandman is, once again, in Arkham Asylum. As Dream returns John Dee to his cell, Jonathan Crane, dressed as The Scarecrow jumps out and attempts to scare Morpheus and Dee. Crane tells Morpheus that he is afraid to return to his cell because he is frightened of the rat that's living in there and of the screams and as Dream leaves Arkham there are "No sounds of screaming, no sobbing, no noises of pain or madness."

Here is Jonathan Crane. I am particularly pleased with this portrait. Scott did a fantastic job with him!!!
