Lord Hades
The Song Of Orpheus was one of the first Sandman issues I read and it's always been one of my favorites. I appreciated how Gaiman took a Greek myth and transformed the story into a part of the Sandman universe.

The Merkin
Scott recently completed some amazing portraits and this is one of them.
The Merkin was one of the emissaries from Hell who traveled to the Dreaming hoping to convince Morpheus to return the Key To Hell to the demons in the Season Of Mists storyline.
Interestingly enough, Scott pointed out that a merkin is a pubic hair wig. These pubic wigs were used when women had to shave off their pubic hair to prevent the spread of lice. Also, it has been pointed out that prostitutes may have used them to hide symptoms of venereal diseases.
While I do not think this demon looks anything like a pubic wig, it is interesting that Neil Gaiman named a female demon after one. Perhaps this is one of Gaiman's little jokes that he didn't expect anyone to notice.

Dreamers at The Wake
One of the cool things about the Sandman universe is that there are tons of characters that are essentially background characters, but if you've ever read one of Gaiman's scripts to Sandman, each panel is described with perfect detail and includes descriptions of everything from settings to minor characters that need to be accounted for.
These are two Dreamers who appear in Sandman # 71. Who are these characters and why were they at The Wake. How did Dream affect their lives? I have no idea and that is a mystery that only Neil Gaiman and Michael Zulli know.
The first Dreamer looks like he is wearing a mask that is sucked into his face. I do not know if he is a significant character in the DC Universe or Vertigo, but if he is I would love to know who he is.
The second Dreamer is also an interesting character. Both Scott and I were reminded of Dr. Phillip Decker from Clive Barker's Nightbreed when thinking of this character.
Both of these Dreamers have stories to tell and I would love to hear them.

Rao & Mizar
Today I received a few more commissions from Scott.
Following Sto-Oa, Scott decided to do two more stars from the Heart Of The Star story in Endless Nights. Mizar is the host of the parliament visited by The Endless and the other stars and beings at the beginning of the Universe. Rao is best known as the Krypton's sun.

Choronzon & Sto-Oa
Here are two new characters from Scott. Choronzon appeared in # 4, 24, 26 and in The Last Sandman Story. Sto-Oa appeared in The Heart Of The Star (from Endless Nights). Scott pointed out that Sto-Oa is the sun for the planet Oa, which is best known as the home of the Guardians Of The Universe who created the Green Lantern rings.

Scott decided to start off on the fun side with the demons of Sandman.

In the Beginning...
It was about six years ago that I first met Scott Mills. I loved his 4"x4" commissions and thought he would draw amazing versions of the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. I was right. He drew each of the seven Endless as if he knew them like old friends. Each drawing was a perfect representation of The Endless; Dream brooding against the night sky, Desire was incredibly androgynous with just a hint of femininity, Death surrounded by skulls and the others all drawn with a familiarity of their personalities and responsibilities.
I wanted more.
I commissioned a few secondary characters; John Constantine, Master Li, Lucifer and others, over the next few years, but it wasn't until this year, 2010, that I revealed my not-so-secret scheme to Scott. I wanted them ALL, and I wanted to see how Scott would interpret each character.
Scott accepted the challenge, not quite understanding the scope of the project. As he learned the details and the depth of my obsession of getting every Sandman character, Scott's excitement grew. You, of course, remember Dream, Death and the other Endless. I'm sure you remember Hob Gadling, Merv Pumpkinhead and Rose Walker, but do you remember Cordelia or Hinnegan or Gerry? I'll give you a hint, they are all in issue #73.
This blog is going to chronicle perhaps the largest and most in depth commission project ever undertaken. Scott is going to draw portraits of every character in the Sandman universe. Any guesses to how many characters there are throughout the series? And without further delay, I present... the Portraits From The Sandman Universe.
