Jamaican Man # 1 (illustrated by Lukas Ketner)

In Preludes And Nocturnes Daniel Bustamonte falls victim to the sleeping sickness that happens as a result of the imprisonment of the King of Dreams.

He spends a lot of his time on the streets, barely awake.

This Jamaican Man is one of the many men that passed by Daniel while he slept on the side of the street. He was in Jamaica in 1955.

He appears in Sandman # 1, page 20, panel 3.

Lukas did a great job with this portrait. In the published comic, this character is barely more than a human shaped blob in the background, but Lukas fleshed him out and gave him life. I love the details on this man’s face…little things like the shape of his nose, his pronounced jawline and the line work used to create his hair. It’s the small details that really stand out when it comes to this character and it’s exactly what I love about this portrait.
