This man is one of the many residents of Hell who returned. He was being tortured by a particularly nasty demon and was able to return to his torment.
He can be seen in Sandman # 28, on page 22, in panel 1.
Max did a wonderful job with this portrait. I love the anguish on this character’s face. It seems completely realistic, which is one thing that I really enjoy about Max’s portraits in general.
