Alex Burgess is the son of Roderick Burgess, the "Daemon King" and head of the Order Of Ancient Mysteries.
Alex was a child when Dream was captured in a ceremony intended to capture Death.
When his father died in 1947, Alex took over the Burgess empire and continued to keep Dream imprisoned.
In 1988, Dream escaped his prison and as revenge for holding him captive he gave Burgess a "gift" of eternal waking, in which he would remain asleep, but in a constant state of dreaming and waking up only to discover he is still within a dream.
Burgess slept for more than five years and awoke only when Dream died and he was released from Dream's retribution.
