Resident Of The Dreaming # 14 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

After a family gathering, Dream decides that perhaps he was a bit rash in condemning Nada, his one-time lover, to Hell for spurning his affection.

He gathers together the residents of his realm to let them know he is about to go to Hell in an attempt to rescue Nada.

This is one of the people who gathered to listen to Dream.

He appears in Sandman # 22, on page 5, in panel 4.

I absolutely love this portrait from Max. This character is dark and mysterious and incredibly intriguing. I love the spirals in her hair and her wild appearance. The red backgrounds contrast nicely with the darkness of the character. This portrait really stands out and is probably one of my favorite portraits from Max so far.

Citizen Of Barbie’s World # 22 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

After Barbie smashes the Porpentine against the Heirogram on the Isle Of Thorns, Dream is summoned to destroy her world. As dictated in the terms of his compact, perhaps with Alianora, he welcomes the citizens of Barbie’s world back into the dark folds of his cloak before un-creating the world.

This character is one of the many citizens of Barbie’s world.

He appears in Sandman # 36, page 34, panel 2.

Garrett Sanford (illustrated by Mike DeCarlo)

Garrett Sanford was one of the early incarnations of the super hero known as The Sandman.

He was a doctor and an expert in dreams and found himself trapped in the Dream Dimension, created by Brute and Glob during Dream’s imprisonment. He helped protect the dreams of Jed Walker, brother of Rose Walker. At one point, Garrett Sanford worked with the Justice League to fight Doctor Destiny (in Justice League Annual # 1).

Overtime, his imprisonment drove him insane and he eventually killed himself.

His body was then used by Hector Hall, who became the third incarnation of the Sandman.

Garrett Sanford appeared, as The Sandman in Sandman # 1-6, written by Michael Fleisher and illustrated by Jack Kirby. This comic was published by DC between 1974-1976. In Sandman, he appears in Sandman # 12, on page 20, in panel 4.

Mike did a great job with this portrait. I like that he brought the super hero attitude from the 70’s into this portrait. The colors he used were not necessarily accurate to the Sandman costume from the 70’s. but reflect the colors used in Sandman # 12.

Here is the Garrett Sanford Sandman…

Village Soldier # 3 (illustrated by Te’Shawn Dwyer)

This Village Soldier appears in “What I’ve Tasted Of Desire” from Endless Nights.

With the village soldiers out on wolf-watch, the Folk From Across The River deliver the head of their leader, and Kara’s husband, to the village, knowing the women were unprotected. Instead of screaming and surrendering, as they expected, Kara fed them a fine meal and sung to them in a seductive manner. Afterwards she teased them and asked which of the men is the most cunning in battle. Nobody can agree and so asked to see the men wrestle, promising the winner something nice.

Each of the men remove their clothes and wrestle. She used their desire for her against them as they passed the night in competition.

When dawn broke, the soldiers returned to the village and slaughtered the men.

This is one of the Village Soldiers.

He appears in “What I’ve Tasted Of Desire” page 19, panel 1.

Monk # 3 (illustrated by Kai Martin)

In Endless Nights, Alain’s and his court live a life beyond death because they locked their gates, preventing Death from visiting his island.

As time passes, Alain entertains his court with a variety of activities such as masquerades and letting his court watch him get squashed by a large bull elephant. Of course, on some days Alain announces that it’s a day of penitence and mortification.

On those days, a group of monks come to the palace and hear the confessions of the citizens of Alain’s court and after the confessions the penitents kneel and are flogged until their blood ran across the mosaic floor.

This man is one of the Monks of Alain’s island. He appears in Endless Nights, in the Death story on page 7 in panel 2.

This is a wonderful portrait from Kai. I really like that the Monk’s face is hidden from us and the shape of the robes. The pointed top feels very sharp, which is appropriate for this character since they visit Alain’s court to provide the citizens with penitence through pain and flogging.
