Bar Patron # 36 (illustrated by Jeremy Haun)

Today I would like to introduce a new member of the Sandman Portraits team. Please welcome Jeremy Haun!!!

I met Jeremy in...2005, I believe, and bought some art from him. He is one of the nicest guys in the comic industry and a fantastic artist. He's worked on tons of books, including Darkness, various Batman books, Battle Hymn and is currently working on Batwoman. He is also one of the creators of Bad Karma, which is a creator-owned anthology. Definitely check out his work.

Jeremy has done several portraits for the blog so far and first up is Bar Patron # 36.

This Bar Patron was playing cards with another man when Hob and Dream met in the late 1800’s.

He can be seen in Sandman # 13 on page 22, Panel 3.

This is another great portrait from Jeremy. As always, Jeremy did an excellent job with the line work for this character’s hair, mustache and mutton chops. This is a very distinctive character from this story and Jeremy really helped make him unique.

Man # 132 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In November 1930, Ruthven Sykes and Ethel Dee runaway from Roderick Burgess and his empire. They take a boat to the United States.

This man is one of the many people at the docks, near the ticket counter, on the day they buy their tickets and leave England for the final time.

He appears in Sandman # 1, on page 16, in panel 2.

I like this portrait by Max. It’s very dramatic and features a wonderful texture to it. It has great line work and I love the colors he used, particularly this shade of blue. While this character may not be the most significant character in the Sandman universe…or significant at all, he is still a wonderful portrait!!!

Party Guest # 17 (illustrated by Ron Chan)

This man was at a party attended by Prez Rickard during the third year of his presidency.

He appears in Sandman # 54, page 11, panel 5. He is in the background standing in the doorway.

He appears to be a guest, but it’s possible that he could be a Secret Service agent although that seems unlikely since there doesn’t appear to be any Secret Service agents near Prez at this party.

I love this drawing. Ron did a great job giving this character personality. I’m guessing this Party Guest either doesn’t know anyone at the party or his wife is off talking to some rich and handsome Senator, leaving this guy to mope around by himself…or perhaps he is a Secret Service Agent unhappy that Prez is not properly protected at this party. There are so may possibilities for this mysterious character...

Citizen Of Baghdad # 5 (illustrated by Max Rugers)

In “Ramadan” we learn about the city of Baghdad and its many splendors.

The court of Haroun al Raschid was one of the wonders of the world and al Raschid ruled his kingdom with wisdom and compassion. Under his rule the city flourished and prospered.

This man is one of the people who attended Haroun al Raschid’s court.

He appears in Sandman # 50, on page 5, in panel 2.

While I don’t necessarily envision the character in the published comic looking like Max’s portrait, I do like it and I love that Max took a character whose face is not visible and gave him a unique look. He creates a realism in his work that I definitely appreciate.

Crazy Prostitute (illustrated by Emonic)

In “Going Inside,” the Delirium story from Endless Nights, a crazy prostitute is one of the group of five people affected by the instability of Delirium.

This prostitute believed that men took her womb and replaced with lizards and fish. She believed that men secretly had babies.

She appears in Endless Nights and throughout the story “Going Inside.”

Emonic did a great job with this character. I really like the fur lining around her coat and the large hoop earrings. It really adds character to this person.

Girl Who Loves Plum Blossoms (illustrated by Max Rugers)

Happy New Year!!!

Once again, I need to apologize for not posting more frequently. While you may not have seen an updates, I have been working behind the scenes on the Portraits blog. I am working on making a definitive collection of reference images for all the artists working on this project and it takes time. Heck, The Song Of Orpheus alone took several weeks due to all those dead people in Hades!!! Anyway, enough about that....

With a new year comes new ambitions and there's some exciting things coming this year. We will be introducing some characters from Sandman Overture into the blog and bringing in some new artists. Also my plan is to post a new portrait every day. I know, I know, I have said this before, but once again it's my plan.

First up for the new year is the Girl Who Loves Plum Blossoms.

In the “15 Portraits of Despair” story from Endless Nights, we have a story about a girl who decides to write a list of things that make her happy. At the top of the paper she writes plum-blossoms.

That is all she can think of to add to the list.

The Girl Who Likes Plum Blossoms appears in “15 Portraits Of Despair” in the 3rd portrait.

I really like this portrait. It’s very beautiful and subtle, but also has a hint of sadness in it…which just confirms that sometimes sadness can be a little bit beautiful.

Faery # 4 (illustrated by Lars Brown)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!

In Sandman # 19, Dream, Titania, Oberon and a host of faeries travel to Wilmington, England to watch the first performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

This character is one of the Faeries to attended this performance.

He appears on page 9 in panel 6.

Lars did a fantastic job with this portrait and it’s one of my favorites he’s done. I love his choice of colors and the life he brought to this character. I also really like the background done for this. He did a great job capturing this character and his surroundings!!!
