Chas Chandler

Chas Chandler is a friend of John Constantine....probably one of the few people that Constantine can call a real friend.

He drives a taxi in London.

Chas drives Constantine and Morpheus to the house in "The Brambles," where they encounter Rachel, an ex-girlfriend of Constantine's and a junkie, addicted to the sand within Dream's stolen pouch.

The Comic Nerds # 1-3

In the A Game Of You, Barbie goes into a comic shop to buy a comic for Wanda.

She encounters a very rude Comic Shop Guy and in the store, there are also three comic nerds.

On a side note, Comic Nerd # 3 strangely resembles one of the co-owners of the best comic shop in town!!!

Here are the three comic nerds.

Burgess' Guards # 7 and 8

Here are two more guards who watched over the Dream King while he was held captive in his glass prison.

These two guards were employed by Alex Burgess in 1982.

Interestingly enough, Guard # 8 is reading IT, by Stephen King. As pointed out in the Annotated Sandman, IT wasn't published until 1986. Perhaps this guard was able to get his hands on an Advanced Reader Copy.

Jonathan Crane

Jonathan Crane is known as The Scarecrow from the Batman mythology. He is one of Batman's most notable villains. Crane, was a professor of psychology and expert in the psychology of fear. He adopted the Scarecrow persona and became a criminal mastermind after being fired due to testing his fear gas on patients.

In Sandman, Jonathan Crane makes two brief appearances in the Preludes And Nocturnes storyline.

His first Sandman appearance is part of John Dee's escape from Arkham Asylum. Dee stumbles upon Jonathan Crane hanging around in a hallway. Crane is attempting to frighten someone who happens upon him and had killed one of the security guards and left him hanging, dead, from the rafters with a "Kick Me" sign taped to his back.

Crane's second appearance in Sandman is, once again, in Arkham Asylum. As Dream returns John Dee to his cell, Jonathan Crane, dressed as The Scarecrow jumps out and attempts to scare Morpheus and Dee. Crane tells Morpheus that he is afraid to return to his cell because he is frightened of the rat that's living in there and of the screams and as Dream leaves Arkham there are "No sounds of screaming, no sobbing, no noises of pain or madness."

Here is Jonathan Crane. I am particularly pleased with this portrait. Scott did a fantastic job with him!!!

Beezlebub

Beezlebub, The Lord Of The Flies, is one member of the triumvirate of Hell (along with Lucifer and Azazel) when Dream visits Hell in search of his missing helmet, after his long imprisonment. Apparently there was a civil war in Hell that resulted in the creation of the triumvirate instead of Lucifer being the sole ruler of Hell.

When Dream returns to Hell to rescue Nada, in the Season of Mists storyline, Hell is no longer a triumvirate. It is not known what caused the end of Beezlebub's rule or where he went once Lucifer locked the gates of Hell.

Wanda

Wanda was born Alvin Mann in a small town in Kansas (presumably), but she moved to New York. Once in New York, Alvin reshapes himself into Wanda.

Wanda was afraid of surgery and so she never underwent sex reassignment surgery, but grew her hair long and took hormones to create his feminine appearance.

She lived in an apartment building and her neighbor was Barbie (previously seen in The Doll's House storyline). Also living in the building was Hazel and Foxglove (both appear in the Death stories) as well as a young woman named Thessaly, who plays a much bigger role in the Sandman mythology later in the series.

One night Wanda is drawn into a bizarre dream world of her childhood by the minions of the Cuckoo and when she is awaken she discovers that Barbie is in some sort of mystical coma. Thessaly, Hazel and Foxglove perform a lunar ritual that allows them to enter Barbie’s dream and rescue her. Because Wanda is still technically a man (due to her penis and fear of surgery) she must remain behind to watch over Barbie's physical body.

As a result of the ritual and calling upon the moon to grant the three women passage into Barbie's Dreams, the weather in New York becomes erratic and the severity of the storm destroyed the apartment building with Wanda still inside.

Barbie, Hazel, Foxglove and Thessaly return to the waking world to discover that Wanda is dead.

When Wanda’s body is returned to Kansas for the funeral, her family cuts her hair, making her appear like a man and buries her in a suit, as if Wanda was still a man. The tombstone says Alvin Mann.

After the funeral, Barbie writes the name "Wanda" in lipstick on the tombstone before getting on a bus and leaving Kansas.

Wanda is an absolutely fantastic character and I think that Scott did a wonderful job with this portrait!!!
